Upgrading old toilet cost?

We were told due to all the changing pipe work etc that the labour cost for fitting a modern toilet in place of our old one would be in the region of £400!
The person has not yet seen the job and is coming in a few days but although i know plumbing is not cheap these days "400" for labour is something i can't get out of my head, unfortunately the other people we contacted have not shown or just don't have time to do this job so we are still searching, this guy is part of our councils approved trader scheme and listed on their own traders recommended to older people trading standards register for fair pricing etc.
He said over the phone this is just to give a general idea of costing for this kind of work but i wondered does that sound fair, i might even have this wrong as the other half thinks this would include the toilet cost but i'm certain he said labour cost as the £400 had he said all in then i would not of been bothered.
When i google it i get £130-£200 to replace modern toilet but no estimate for upgrading, i'm also having a sink basin replaced and they told me to expect the final quote to be in the region of £800!!! altogether.
Does this sound right or should i continue to search elsewhere?

Measure the height of your waste pipe at the back of the toilet. Compare it to modern pans. Even if the heights do not match, adaptors are available to make up for small differences. Are you changing from a high level cistern to a close coupled system ?
That might explain the inflated cost as additional work may be required to patch up plaster & fill any holes.

The quote (estimate ?) sounds well over the top for half a days work - Get a few other quotes, possibly from a general purpose handyman rather than a plumber.

We're in south west Wales where labour is admittedly cheaper than where we're originally from in the south of England, but we just paid a plumber £120 per day and in our case we've moved the bathroom to a different location. Admittedly this is only to the next room as the existing bathroom.....and the soil pipe is a short distance from the site of the new loo.

We supplied all sanitary ware and most of the plumbing materials.

He did all the first fix (pipework for basin, freestanding bath and high level toilet) on one day and fitted the bath and toilet on the second. DH has done all the tiling etc.

He's coming back for a half day to fit the heated towel rail and vanity/basin as we need to block a doorway first.....don't ask, lol!

So all in all to fit bath, toilet, basin and heated towel rail will be £300......

When we lived in Wiltshire, we paid around £8k for labour only (excluding tiling) to fit two of our bathrooms....but the plumber was a real perfectionist  ;)

@Frank99 have you got a photo of the pipe (to the left of the toilet)? As your looks a lot newer than my original pipework.

The positioning of the toilet is one reason for this spaghetti pipework.
If it could be placed back to the main outlet that would be an easier job. This is a bit of a who-dun-it.
Makes me feel better about the Heath Robinson disabled shower I have to take out though, Thanks.
I wouldn't be happy with a quote from someone who hasn't seen it though.

  • £400???

All you need is a swan neck pan connector and your water inlet is flexy so that won't be an issue either

I would be looking at doing it yourself or getting a handyman in to do it , would work out much cheaper
