reading posts here i am guessing that theres a good chance i had ppi,

Northern Rock only retailed monthly premium MPPI with their mortgages since the early 90s.  So, you would know if you had PPI or not because it would have its own direct debit.   So, based on the fact you are unsure, it really means its more likely that you didn't have it.

ust looking for advise how to proceed, as i read there are legal avenues

Some CMCs are trying the legal route via the courts.  However, it comes it risks and its you that carries the risk.  Its not cost free if you lose.   Some may advertise as no fee no win but they usually have ATE insurance that you need to buy to cover the costs if you lose.   Some even get you to sign a loan agreement to pay for it (another earner for them).   Some dont have ATE and they get mugs to invest in litigation claims (the payoff being they get x% of the settlement).   So, real money being made is the directors of the CMC draining the fund of money.  So, to get more money in, they need people signed up.  Whether they have a chance of success or not.   These types of companies tend to have bit retention rates if you win.  40-50% plus VAT is not unusual.

The courts are not a consumer-friendly as the FOS and there are timebars to bringing action.    Plus, the PPI would need to be sold under a debt regulated by the consumer credit act.  Mortgage PPI 15 years ago wouldn't have been.
