We went to Lake Bohinj in May 2001, and it was beautiful.

Things are very cheap out there, although the gap may have closed a little now that Slovenia has joined the EU and people have started to discover it. £1 is about 350 Slovenian Tolars. We took some cheques and some cash. Cash is easier to exchange as there are little places dotted about the tourist areas that only exchange cash, however these will charge a nominal fee, albeit with the exchange rate being a little better. With traveller's cheques we had to go to a bank (you can use post offices too), and didn't get quite as good an exchange rate, although there is no commission in these places.

It's definitely worth exchanging when you get there rather than here, and for the sake of security it's worth taking cheques rather than cash.

Hope that helps - whereabouts are you going? We'd love to go back sometime, maybe next year though!

Just found this which sums it up quite nicely!

Edit: A pint of lager is less than £1 in most places, a 3 course meal for 2 will be around £10-15 max.
