hi folks
since my main pc has been knacked for a couple of weeks now it's about time I got it fixed
the motherboard is shot
the spec is (old)
IBM motherboard (DDR2) rev 3.3 thats the only writing on it
3.4 ghz P4 CPU
DDR2 400 RAM
SATA hard drive
basically I'm after a motherboard but I'm not too confident of buying the correct one as my PC knowledge is limited
I'm not too bad hands on installing hardware etc it's just the technical spec's i'm not too sure about
so if anyone can help with identifying something suitable please do so
thanks

You have to get a m/b that your cpu will fit. I guess it will be a socket 478 or a lga775. They are not interchangable as far as I know.
Do you need on-board graphics?0 -
since the cpu is ok, the m/b should have on board graphics
how would I know if it's a socket 4780 -
as the op im after a new m/b,
i want to upgrade my cpu in near future to a dual core so needs to be able to accomadate it, i need ddr2 slots ideally 2 or 4, i have a seperate graphics card (its AGP) so need agp slot and 2 pci slots
thats it i think lolSilenced by the Gestapo :rotfl:0 -

Hi you have to find out more info from your m/b, or you need to find out exactly which cpu you have.See this; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_Pentium_4_microprocessors
You could have a 478 or 775 the 775 was introduced in june 2004. There are part numbers in this listing so you may have to read what it says on your cpu. Keep us posted.0 -
To the OP:
If you remove the CPU's heatsink, you may find that the socket type is marked on the socket itself. If not, clean the heatsink compound off the top of the CPU and find the Spec number on it (which will look something like SL7PY), then look that number up here:
http://processorfinder.intel.com/List.aspx?ProcFam=483&sSpec=&OrdCode=
The right-hand column will tell you what socket type it is. Suppliers like ebuyer.com list their mobos by socket, so choosing should be easier there. BTW, if your socket type is 478 you won't find much choice!0 -
dont really matter if its 478 or 775 socket, there seems to be only 1 choice left now for either mobo with an agp slot.
(gigabyte 478 and asrock 775).Get some gorm.0 -
Ah yes, that may be true, but the OP didn't say that they needed an AGP slot (and the "me-too" poster who wanted an AGP slot didn't even specify what make of CPU they have!).0
