My niece is almost 12 and beginning to experiment with mine & her mum's makeup. I've suggested buying her some for Christmas / January birthday, but am not sure what brands to consider...her mum and I wear an assortment of Bobbi Brown, MAC, Clinique & Estee Lauder and we're keen to encourage thrift in her own makeup bag!

What did you use when you were 12.Life is like a bath, the longer you are in it the more wrinkly you become.0

ELF is a pretty cheap brand and is actually very good quality for the price.1

Superdrug's own brand, I think it's MUA, is pretty good. I bought a couple of bits for fancy dress and they were much better than I'd expected for the price.1

Superdrug MUA stuff is really affordable, cheap and good quality. I use a few of their products.
Otherwise, Rimmel or Maybelline tend to have offers on all the time, 3 for 2 type things. I remember being 12 and stealing my mums posh No7 face creams!!Officially a homeowner 🥳🥳

CYO cosmetics are always on sale on the Boots.com website. There are only two items showing currently but I know not long ago there were about 10. I've never used them myself but for a few quid you can't go wrong.2

For mascara the Boots Natural Collection waterproof or volumising is fantastic - £1.99 a tube (although the packaging may be too utlitarian for your/her taste)
If you're getting her into makeup, you should also ensure she has a proper cleansing regime (not wipes) and ideally uses facial SPF regularly too.1 -
My 13 year old granddaughter is very much into make up. She spends hours on YouTube etc watching videos of how to apply and techniques. Consequently, she only wants brands used by the so-called influencers. It’s a complete mystery to me but she had well over £100 worth of products for her birthday. Probably more than I spend in a year!1

Personally, when I was that age I would buy things from market stalls - it was all about quantity, not quality as I was very experimental! But, noting pattycakes comment, that may well be different now!
I'd recommend a palette of eyeshadow - that way she can try different colours out, see what she likes. I've found sleek do some good ones (can get from Amazon). Definite "no" to any lip colour palettes - they end up such a mess!!
Depending on her personality, Barry M do a lot of interesting colours, and they used to be vegan/cruelty free (not sure now). They stock it on asos, so must still be trendy these days 🤣1
