Hi all, quickie .... my pc has just run out of guarantee and i want to upgrade now so is it possible to just whip out the 1gb ram and stick in a 2gb ram instead or is it more difficult than that?

Not sure of the relevance of it running out of guarantee (you're covered by SOGA and memory upgrading has no affect on warranties). Depending on the free slots you can simply add the RAM so in your example you'd have 3 GiB instead of 2 GiB or you can simply replace the memory sticks. Either way it's as simple as it sounds.

Just try a 1gb stick at first- I bet you hardly notice any difference. What cpu do you have?

Also what OS? If you're running Vista 2Gb might make a noticable difference, under XP it probably won't unless you do lots of memory intensive tasks like video editing or you have onboard graphics eating up your memory.

Its not a problem to upgrade your memory but you have to open up the computer to find what kind of memory you have ie is it SDRAM etc. Usually you fit more memory easily however you have to be aware that you can only upgrade using the same amount of memory ie. Computers usually have four banks minimum you have 1GB which could be 512MB*2 which ideally means you need to purchase another 512MB SDRAM (max 2 on for bank). If however you have anything else then it gets expensive. If already a bank of 4*256MB then you have to buy two 1GB SDRAM. If you have 1GB then you only need to buy 1 more. All depends on inside your computer. Remember to earth yourself by touching the chasis on the computer whilst fitting the new chips to prevent static blowing parts.

What? Where do you get that from? You don't need to have the same amount of memory per stick. And you don't need to open the computer to even check what you've got. Crucial's system scanner will even tell you what slots are taken up and with what. Probably easier to tell the type of RAM from that than physically looking.

  • This is what the crucial scan told me. 2 slots with 512. Crucial could not reccomend an upgrade.
