Two accounts into one?

My husband and I each have a current account with Santander. We want to switch banks as we are paying more in monthly fees than we are earning in interest. We also want to just have one joint account. Both of the accounts currently have direct debits going out. Would I have to firstly close one account down and then switch, or is there a facility to do this all at the same time?

Why don't you each your account, thereby getting two switch incentives and then make them into a joint. Or keep one as a donor and make the other joint after switching?
I think that maybe switching a joint a/c isn't quite as easy as switching an individual (I don't have experience buit have read a few comments which suggests the joint isn't as straightforward.)
Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!

If you're referring to the Santander 123 or 123 Lite, thyen you can downgrade to an Everyday account to avoid the monthly fee if you don't get enough cashback to cover it. You can't switch a closed account, so don't do that. I'd suggest looking at making both of your sole accounts joint and then switch them both into a non-Santander joint account (you can't switch internally within the same bank).
Alternatively, as suggested above you can get more incentive payments if you switch as individuals, but it won't help you combine the two accounts together if that is your ultimate goal.1 -
