Unless there are other real issues with this employer, in the current climate I really wouldn't rock the boat!

Take a bottle from home or make use of the free hot drinks. They are something the employer is not obliged to provide and I bet you wouldn't be popular with the other staff if you come in one day to find the machine removed and replaced with a cold tap!
    Disagree with this!
The employer should be providing free and clean drinking water.

If I were that employer I'd provide free bottles of water, this problem's been going on too long now.

I say rock the boat!! Current climate or not. And if the machine has been removed and replaced with a cold tap, what's the big hey?

If you're in a union, contact them. This is a legal issue, for sure.

I rather doubt the rest of the staff would be happy!

Yes, they should be providing clean drinking water. We all know that. However that is ALL they have to do.

Be careful what you wish for!

Why??? I've never worked anywhere with a water machine. We always had tap water. It's fine. Surely the rest of the staff wouldn't be bothered as long as they had clean drinking water as opposed to what they've got now, no water at all?!

And providing clean drinking water is certainly NOT 'all' employers have to do! You're obviously not an employer, nor are you familiar with H&S law.

Be careful what I wish for? Why? What does that mean?

What strange responses to my comment.

There is still a supply of clean drinking water but it is not easy for all staff to access.

As they only have to provide drinking water, if people cause too much fuss you may find the hot drinks machine which is free may be removed.  I believe that is what the person was pointing out.

Only 2 days since the water dispenser broke down, and should be fixed within a week. Although it would be nice if the employer provided bottled water, there is still an alternative supply. Had this been going on for weeks or should this go on for weeks I would agree that pressure should be put on the employer.

It would be interesting to know why the drinking water supply in the ladies' toilets should not be used.

Some of the suggestions in this thread are beyond ridiculous. The employer has acknowledged the dispenser is broken and a part is on order for next week.  Its not as if he has said "meh, forget about it" and its not being fixed, has he? Suggestions of unions and the HSE being involved....behave.

Sort an interim solution out yourself, plenty of suggestions posted. Also look again at this hot drinks machine you have, a lot of them do actually have a water only option given they will be plumbed into the water mains.

I work in a shop. The plumbed water dispenser in the staff area is broken for 2 days and awaiting a part, which will take another week and the drinking tap in the female toilets has had a sign on it "do not use" for months. There's only a plumbed in hot water urn and a drinking water tap in the male toilets. There's also a hot drinks vending machine which is free.

I know my employer are supposed to provide drinking water. Is this acceptable?

Perfectly acceptable. Just bring in your own bottle of water for the next week while the plumbed water dispenser is being fixed.
