Company claim I returned the wrong item via DPD

A company couldn't fulfil my full initial order so they agreed to arrange for a collection and refund of the items I had already received.  They arranged for DPD to collect the parcel and return it to them.  DPD collected the parcel from me but the parcel which arrived and it's contents wasn't the parcel I sent.  DPD have said the company still haven't requested an investigation and they can't do this at my request as they have the contract with the company who arranged for the collection / delivery.  I only have the word of the company that the items weren't switched when it arrived back with them.
On top of this the company have taken money out of my account to pay for the collection without my consent.
Someone has stolen the original items along the way, surely this is theft?  Plus theft of money by the company?
What can I do?

Ask for a refund from the company as it's not your fault if they can't fulfil your order or if the courier has misplaced items that you have returned.

And if they don't refund ... raise a chargeback claim (I assume you paid using a credit or debit card?) for the returns cost (plus anything else they may still owe you).

And you can't claim on a chargeback for return costs, only the original purchase amount that debited your account :)

Something very fishy about this.  It appears to me that the seller is being economical with the truth and trying to find a way not to refund you. Press on with any chargeback claim.

You can't do a chargeback for an unauthorised transaction? Or would the OP have to dispute the transaction? (To get the same effective result).

PS - the OP and the company agreed to nullify the contract because the company was in breach of said contract. Therefore the costs of return fall with the party in breach.
