Renovation Insurance

My girlfriend is about to complete on a house and needs to sort her building insurance. She is not planning on living in the house until after it's renovated. Contractors haven't been arranged yet so the property will be empty but not being renovated for a few months. We know most regular providers won't cover the property when it's being renovated but should she be taking out a regular policy and then trying to get renovation insurance afterwards, or should we just go directly to a renovation insurance provider?

If buying with a mortgage insurance will be required. As you say for what is planned standard insurance will be void so she would need to arrange insurance that allows the house to be unoccupied (and undergoing renovation). When renovations are complete (and the specialist insurance has come to an end) then take out a suitable 'standard' policy.1

When I had renovation work done I relied on the contractor's insurance at the suggestion of the architect. I don't know how wise that was. The OP would obviously need some insurance that covers the house being left empty before the work starts.

I would be very careful with the above, Relying on a contractors insurance you leave yourself open to the pitfalls of their insurance...if they bother paying it...if they bothered doing it correctly etc..etc..
When I last looked BGi.uk offered renovation insurance...worth a go?-3 -
As mentioned above a broker is the best way forward, they should be able to get you empty property insurance for a few months then renovation insurance for as long as you need it.0
