    Well you don't get to 'test drive' most purchases. Though I wouldn't buy a car without a test drive.
    I would always test drive a used car before purchasing.
    With most other used purchases, the condition can be seen just by a visual inspection.  That's the equivalent of a 'test drive'.  

    items where you would have the equivalent of a 'test drive' is to see a used TV actually working, for example.  We once purchased a second-hand table and checked the extending mechanism before purchasing.

    I agree, however, it would be odd to see a used TV and carry it round the block as a "test drive".
