Electricity cut off from the main , can somebody help

We bought a property that was empty for about 3 years and we knew the services were disconnected, but we didn't know the  extend of the problem , now the distributor said that we have to paid around 2000 pound for a new connection for the property  , because they have to cut it off from the main as the people who previous ave a least on it , did illegal connections, we feel that is not fair for us to have to pay for something is not our fault
We really didn't do a survey because we didn't have too and we were short of money as the property need renovation what we were planning to do ourselves.
Also when we try to contact another supplier they said they wont charge as for a new metter a they can see there where 3 supplier at the property  and they can see there is one which could  be energised back and they can see it on ECOES but North west is saying they forgot to updated it on the system because all the problems going on with the property by that time
Anyone can advised where do we stand please

  • Unfortunately it will be too late. All you can try and do is negotiate a lower price from the supplier but this is probably unlikely.

  • You stand hoping price was low enough to permit fixing these -and there will be other -issues.

    Sounds like cannabis farm.

    Perhaps worth learning editing?

I think I'd have scraped together the money for a survey if I'd been buying somewhere that had been empty for 3 years.  There's a whole lot of things that could be wrong with it and push reno costs up.

Sorry you are in this position but it's a bit 'horse - stable - bolted'.

Of course, a surveyor isn't likely to have told the OP much more than the electricity appeared to be disconnected (which they already knew about) and they recommend you get an electrician to check it out...
  • If the cost of the work is £2,000, then it is fair that YOU pay for this - YOU are the ones wanting the benefit of the works. Do you think it would be fairer for someone else to pay for you?

You say that another supplier would connect you for free. If you don't believe what North West are telling you, then why not go with that supplier.
