Side gate issue

Hi, I have the gate in the attached pic, the frame is very unstable because the latch post is only anchored at the bottom due to the retainer wall. It’s already a narrow passage, but I’m looking for ideas to make this more stable and/or secure. Help please?

  • Who owns the fence
  • If you own the fence one option would be move the gate further down to the nearest concrete post or re site the post so it runs flush against the fence and secure to the horizontal pieces of wood /bottom wall. If you don't own the fence your neighbour might still be willing to have your gate post attached to the fence

Put a bracing timber, say 4x1.5" or 100x38mm (or angle iron), running diagonally at top and fix it to the wall and post.  Something like below:

It's a non standard size and a home DIY project probably. If it's your fence, I'd follow previous suggestion about moving it.

One option would be to do away with the frame - the door, or a slightly wider one has a sturdy fixing to the house,  It only needs something to latch to at the other side and you could do this with a long drop bolt into the ground.
