I have tried before and recently tried again to switch energy supplier for a better deal. I have been emailed to say that the info on my current bill with British Gas does not match the ' national database' doesn't give anymore specific info than that. I see other people have had the same problem. Why is thos a common obstacle and how do I get it sorted ?

You need to do some simple checks yourselfDo your meter numbers match those on your bills ?Does your gas MPRN on the bill match the database ? https://www.findmysupplier.energy/webapp/index.htmlContact your electricity regional supplier to check the MPAN and meter number details https://www.energynetworks.org/operating-the-networks/whos-my-network-operator

Also what type of meter do you have? - the type of meter you have put down might not match what has been provided (pre payment, credit, economy 7 etc.)0

When I switched earlier this year, it turned out our address had two entries on the database, depending whether you scrolled up or down. One was a disconnection. The matter was resolved by the new supplier (who found it for me).
