Electrician status?

I have found a very good electrician, he first did the electrical part of a bathroom re-fit sub-contracting to the bathroom installers.
As I found his work very good and reasonably priced, he has done two other jobs for me, excellent work carried out.
My query is, do I have to ascertain if he is a qualified electrician.
I have never spoken to him in general, he seems to be aware of yearly changes in electrical regulations etc.
A friend requires a house re-wire and I do know that I or my friend can just ask him if he is trade qualified.
My question is, for legal reasons/insurance etc do I have to ensure that he is qualified?

yes, it's the homeowners responsibility to ensure work carried out is completed by a competent tradesman.
generally the give away is if you don't get an invoice, installation certificate and part p certificate, then they aren't *competent*

Just look him up on the niceic register.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

He might not be registered with NICEIC, there are other competent persons schemes he might be registered with.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.

Why don't you want to just ask him?
  • Did he sign the certificate regarding the electrical part of the bathroom installation?

How does the OP know that the work and worker are "very good" as claimed when it is clear that the OP has no particular knowledge of electrical installation?
I would recommend an NICEIC Approved Contractor or ECA Registered Member for electrical installation work, or in the south of Ireland a RECI Registered Electrical Contractor.
