My experience is that after six years you will find the defaults fall off your credit files and your score will rise.  I know that that there is a mantra on this site that credit scores are meaningless - however you will find that once the defaults dissapear you will get alsorts of offers for various cards/loans.  At the six year mark my credit file looked very respectable despite the fact I was still on a DMP at this point.  Looking at my credit file this was not obvious and hence why I got numerous credit offers.
