Anybody got a sedum roof?

We are having plans drawn up for a single storey garden room extension which will have a shallow pitched roof. I'm thinking rather than look at a lot of dull flat roof material under my bedroom window, a sedum roof would look much nicer. Does anybody have experience of these, in particular planted tray options?

TIA

  • Had to google it and I can see why you'd want one, but all I can foresee is problems with it (damp, wildlife etc).
No man is worth crawling on this earth.

So much to read, so little time.
  • I love this idea, had one on a shed roof, 2 houses ago, and it was great, didn't encounter any damp problems within the shed but ...... on a house i have no experience.
I think i'd do more research before going ahead, look into the, drainage/membrane, etc. i've seen this done, often, on that designing homes tv programme with whatshisname - Kevin someone.

I was actually considering this for the shed i have here but i'm only at the first thoughts stage yet 😋

I too am concerned about damp issues etc, but came across this system where the stuff is grown in trays which would be removable for maintenance, or disposal if it was a real issue.  https://sedumgreenroof.co.uk/premium-s-pod-system/

I don't have one so no personal experience.      I've seen lots started on projects like "Grand Designs " on TV but even when the cameras return a couple of years later the roofs never look very good or very healthy in  my opinion.

Vegetated roofs look great in the right place, but they need proper care, which very few of them seem to get.  Its certainly not a fit-and-forget like most roof coverings.  If it is sedum, then you will need to water it and weed it (and possibly moss-kill if it doesn't get enough sun-light all year round).  A wildflower roof basically needs grazed or mown for hay!
