New long number on replacement card?

If you lose your card and get a replacement, will the long number (I'm sure there's a name for it) be the same? Thanks for any answers.

Usually only changes if you report a card lost or stolen, and not if it just expires. Obviously you will have a different expiry date and CVC number in all cases.

My new Natwest credit card which I lost somewhere in Sainsburys the other week arrived with a new 16 digit number on it.

    Not always.
Some card providers still have the same exp date on lost/stolen/replacement cards. Due to system limitations. Only renewal cards get a new exp.

  • Fair enough. Certainly a different CVC though,  it would be a 1 in 1000 chance you get the same one again (some three digit codes I suspect they dont use though like 000)

It varies by card issuer... I know with our AmEx the card number changes one each card replacement irrespective of the reason whereas others persist the same number in most circumstances.
  • I told amex my card looked really tatty. They sent me a new one with a different long number. Rather frustrating but there you have it.

I had a replacement Lloyds Bank credit card once with all the same details including CVV and expiry date. It wasn't lost or stolen though it was just to replace a damaged card so probably not much of a security risk as long as I destroyed the old card (which I did).
