Fridge won’t stay closed. At the end of my tether!

  • I wonder if it was poorly installed in the first place, so not level diagonally. Over time the fridge body might have sagged slightly across this plane which will make the fridge front also not perfectly flat - ergo the door cannot seal evenly on it.

Mind you, it would have to be a cheap nasty fridge for this... :-)

We had a similar problem with a fridge-freezer we "inherited" when we bought a house.  The door on the freezer was warped, wouldn't shut properly, and consequently the freezer iced up very quickly.

I bought some velcro webbing, glued one piece of velcro-back onto the door and another piece onto the side of the fridge, then used the velcro-front as a strap to pull the freezer door tight shut, attaching it to both pieces of velcro-back.  Worked very well.

As others have noted, a child lock should also work the same way in this situation.

Hi all, apologies for late reply, I’m between nights this week so haven’t had chance to have a go at the suggestions yet. I don’t think a child lock would work as it’s right next to the integrated freezer, unless maybe I put the integrated door back on. I’ve attached a picture to show (along with the rucksack I’m using to keep it shut, which doesn’t always work!) The make is Lamona? Not heard of it myself. The model number on the sticker inside says HJA6302. Not sure why the pictures are on their side sorry. I shall report back when I’ve had a crack tomorrow. Thank you all :)
  • We had a similar problem with the freezer door of a fridge freezer. The top of the door seal would not close properly, resulting in a build up of ice which had to be defrosted every couple of days. We searched online and found a brilliant simple solution. Put Vaseline along the seal of the door and the freezer and it will connect perfectly.
We also used a child lock to be sure, but it closes perfectly now even without the child lock.
    Worth a try.

Often this can be the sign one or both of the hinges are broken
Something like this, I've done several other makes but never come across a lamona before
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/GENUINE-INTEGRATED-HJA6302-4350840400-4350840300/dp/B017YDMV0M
I can see you can buy them singularly on ebay if jus one broke.
  • Looks like a Howdens product.

Are the hinges like these, Golf? https://www.howdens.com/kitchens/appliances/refrigeration/fridges/lamona-hja6132-integrated-white-fridge-hja6132

I think you'll have to remove the appliance door completely and then look for the obvious issues - poorly adjusted hinges, door warped etc.

Hi all, sorry for very late reply as I’ve been rushed off my feet with work but I wanted to update in case someone else has this trouble and comes across my thread. I took the seal off this morning and spun it around which didn’t work so I took the bottom hinge off and the door stayed shut! So I took both hinges off just to see and there’s so much play and no resistance at all and I’m sure this shouldn’t be the case. I’ve ordered some new hinges which are coming on Saturday so fingers crossed this does the trick! Thanks for all your advice.
  • Love this thread as i'm in the same situation.

We bought ours brand new though and from memory it's forever done it. You push the top section (fridge) shut and it hits the fridge body and then starts to open again. You have to then push it and sort of just hold it against so that there's no 'impact'.

Have had 2 incidents with the freezer too. Pushing this shut and thinking it's secured itself when it hasn't.

And our floor isn't even sloped.
  • When my fridge door fails to stay closed it means that there is a build up of ice on the back of the fridge. It needs clearing every few months.

The new hinges solved it! When I had the new hinge next to the old, it appeared that the old hinge wouldn’t close fully - as can be seen on the attached picture - even with me applying pressure which was in effect, pulling the fridge door open. I am absolutely thrilled that I’ve sorted this, it has been driving me insane for almost two years now. Girl power  apologies for the dirty floor, it has since been mopped
