    If she was 50 in 2004 then obviously she'll now be 66, give or take a year, which isn't really what would generally be considered elderly as such.  Not looking to pick holes though, but just countering the narrative that her age makes her vulnerable (though her health may) in the context of an apparent expectation that a creditor should be sympathetic....

    Really you’d of expected this account to default. Have they closed the account fully and it’s not longer on her credit file? 

    If not the damage of arrangement to pay (if it can’t be paid off or anyone lend the money to do so) will be more damaging than a default long term over the years...

    You could stop the payments. Eventually they’ll default it and sell it on to a debt agency for pennies.

    Not the moral thing to do, but after the amount of interest and such you’ve already paid..
