It's also worth noting that there are a lot of exclusions for these homecare type of products. Including a lot of the things that commonly go wrong with boilers, funnily enough.  A bit like pet insurance or car warranties.  After my experiences I'm now in the 'save the money and pay up if it happens' camp.

We also used to have a British Gas homecare package, and for the last 6 years have not bothered. We have paid less in maintenance and service over those 6 years than the equivalent per month cost for BG homecare package would have been.

We do have a British Gas boiler & heating package (they have so many different ones) which came 'free' with our energy on the cheapest big name tariff. They came out twice last year to our boiler, £99 excess, I don't remember whether we paid once or twice. Two new circuitboards and a new fan, with the parts costing more than the excess at least.

This month when said boiler broke we booked in with them, but cancelled it after Direct Line sorted it quicker - and there was no excess. When we were renewing our home insurance with them, we looked at the level of cover and decided it was worth it to us.
