Want to buy a new laptop

We both have an iPad and want to buy a laptop. We used to have A desktop Computer but got rid of it. Sometimes we can’t download stuff on our iPad . What should we looking for . What speed etc . It won’t be used for gaming or watching tv . Not sure of budget as we don’t necessarily want to but the cheapest, and it not be any good, but hoping to get one under £300 . Please help ,
