Upgrading a laptop

Hi all

I've been asked to look at a Toshiba Satellite C660/C660D as it's running very slow.
I've noticed it's got a 5400RPM mechanical drive and only 2GB of RAM (running Windows 10 Home).

I've priced up a new drive (SSD) and some more RAM from Crucial but I was wondering if I can get the bits cheaper (and save my neighbour some money).

Priced I have are:-
480GB SATA SSD - £55.19
2GB DDR3L 1600 SODIMM RAM - £11.99 (this will take it up to 4GB.  It will take up to 8GB but I think that will be overkill for what they use it for (general browsing and Faceache)).
It also need a new battery (the current one doesn't hold a charge).

I know I can get the SSD and RAM from Crucial but I'm not sure about the battery.

Anyone know where I can get the bits I need cheaper ( don't know what sellers are still reputable these days).  I'd prefer to get all the part from one supplier if that's possible.

Any help gratefully received.

TIA

Richard

  • A 480GB SSD seems overkill too if it's just for browsing. Personally I'd go for a smaller SSD and the full 8GB RAM.
Funnily enough I've just replaced the HDD in my wife's C660 with an SSD I had spare (Kingston 96GB) as it would no longer boot. That already has 8GB (also bought from Crucial).

They've got a lot of photos on there (with more to follow) so they'll need the storage.  The current drive is split into 2 partitions (C and D) with the photos on the D drive which is why I didn't go for a smaller SSD.

You can always use the old drive as external storage. Just plug it in via a USB enclosure when you need to.

Smaller SSD and get a cheap USB caddy to use the older hard drive for storage.

Is the 2gb in there 1 or 2 sticks?
Might be worth a punt with CEX they do 2gb sticks at £1 if you want to try with 4gb, 4gb sticks are £8

Lots of options then but when deciding whether to big or small on the SSD, ask where the photos are backed up too. (ideally 2 sets at home, master and a copy and another set away from home whether physical or cloud).
If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.

Part/Product number? It's written on the underside of the laptop.
For the sake of a tenner, I would stick with the MX500, as opposed to the BX500: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Crucial-MX500-CT500MX500SSD1-NAND-Internal/dp/B0784SLQM6/ref=pd_sbs_147_1/261-8346153-8386633

Has a five year warranty, as opposed to three for the cheaper model..or just get a smaller capacity SSD(no one has 450GB worth of photos: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Crucial-MX500-CT500MX500SSD1-NAND-Internal/dp/B0764WCXCV/ref=pd_sbs_147_1/261-8346153-8386633 £30.

4GB of RAM is more than adequate, especially in conjunction with a decent SSD. Bear in mind that the existing module within is DDR3 RAM 1333MHz PC3-10600.

You can save money on the RAM, either from CEX or just get a larger 4 GB capacity module for the same price as the Crucial 2 GB(for 6GB in total): https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/XUM-MEMORY-RAM-DDR2-DDR3-DDR4-2GB-4GB-8GB-16GB-DESKTOP-SERVER-LAPTOP-Lot/324147842806
