I found a garage and got my car MOTed anyway. Did not want to be caught up in a mad rush, as and when the extension finishes.

Wrong country  . You're on the NI board here, and garages can't do MOTs - only govt test centres.

I’m worried about that too. Not being able to get an appointment because demand is so high. Even in normal times, my local centre is often fully booked out 6 weeks in advance. If they’re now saying my MOT is due in January, I’d prefer to book it now but it also says that cars over 5 years old are not allowed to book tests yet so I can’t!

I think they would be better just saying ‘TEC’ on the search results, rather than giving a random date which may change later. Perhaps multiple times. It would be less confusing.

I went online and booked a car that was 4 year old in August with an extension to 5th February 2021 and an 11 year old light goods vehicle that had been extended to 31st January 2021 to be tested in Ards in January. Both were accepted and there were loads of availability.

  • Hi,   I bought a used car in Sept, due MOT in May but postponed to November.  Got a letter to book MOT by phone a few weeks back and am getting the MOT in Lisburn tomorrow.  Was really surprised but may as well get it out of the way.
Life in this world is, as it were, a sojourn in a cave. What can we know of reality? For all we can see of the true nature of existence is, shall we say, no more than bewildering and amusing shadows cast upon the inner wall of the cave by the unseen blinding light of absolute truth, from which we may or may not deduce some glimmer of veracity, and we as troglodyte seekers of wisdom can only lift our voices to the unseen and say humbly "Go on, do deformed rabbit again.....it's my favourite". © Terry Pratchett in "Small Gods"

  • In true Northern Ireland style, we seem to be leaving decisions to the very last moment. As far as I can recall, MOT tests have been partly or fully suspended since January 2020, meaning that some people will shortly be approaching 24 months since their last MOT test.

However, the Temporary Exemption Certificate (applied either because of the scissor lifts or COVID-19) can only be applied for a max of 12 months, so what is going to happen in January 21, when the max TEC expires and they still aren’t testing vehicles over 4 years old (assuming nothing changes on this in the next month)?

Just a side note - my car is due tax at the end of this month but when I went to tax it via the website it said the mot was invalid.
It took me a while to find the right number to ring but when I did it was confirmed that a system error had only put on the first 6 months TEC and not the second one (my car is well over 4 years old!)
All sorted now and car taxed but just be aware. You can check the mot status of your car here ...

  • My car will be 3 years old in June.  When I check the MOT status it just says "No details held by DVLA"  The information on the "Book an MOT/Vehicle Test online" page is not at all clear but I think it says I don't need to have it tested yet.  Can anyone confirm?  Thanks

If you are in Northern Ireland, and this is the Northern Ireland board, you dont need to MOT until the car is 4 years old
