Moving Home Fridge Freezer Advise

I am shortly moving home only about 15 miles away. I have a removal company lined up. What are the rules about fridge/freezer and Freezers. Do they have to be switched off the night before. As for the food in the freezer how long can I keep it during move if I wrap it well up or do I need to throw it all away.

Run down the contents of the freezer as much as possible and pack the remainder into cool boxes with ice packs.  If you don't have cool boxes you need to balance the cost of purchase against the value of the food you may lose.  If the freezers and fridge are the frost free type you can probably just switch them off early on the day of departure to give them time to cool down.  If the freezers have a build up of ice you will need to defrost.

Probably more important to let the fridge/freezer stand in its new position for a few hours before switching it on.

My guys kept the freezer upright when moving it, 20 miles, I left it off for a few hours after moving, nothing defrosted.

You're lucky. Some removers won't take a FF unless it's been fully defrosted.
  • Why have you not asked the removal company this question instead of strangers on the web?

Run the fridge and freezer down , anything left in the freezer will stay frozen for 24 hrs if you keep the lid closed and empty the fridge (the last thing you want is glass jars and liquid bouncing around in the back of the van , also gives you a chance to give it a clean ) fridge items will survive out of the fridge for 24 hrs
