Male Labrador licking, nibbling around genital area.

The vet thinks it might be Atopic dermatitis,  an allergy to something in the environment. In his case I suspect it is when nettles or ivy brush against his underside but no-one is sure.  He's on a good diet and treated for parasites and the vet seems to think he's in good condition.  However, he has a few bald patches underneath which is difficult for the vet to see. He gets aggressive if vets try to examine him, although he just lets me.  Owners can't come in with their dogs at the moment.  Oral steroids seem to work for about a month until he starts again.  A steroid based cream seems to be beneficial for his ears which might be the same problem.  There's a few other drugs but the vet decided not to use it Aquopal? again after developing a lump in his ear

It seems a bit ridiculous to keep going to the vet ,so they can have a quick glance underneath in the car park whilst I hold him. So I ordered a steroid spray for dogs from a mainstream vet supplier who supply to owners, to see if it might be some use. 1 month later it hasn't arrived.  Is this reasonable time delay at present?  They blame Covid restrictions to air freight of course!  Royal mail tracking gives a baffling reply which implies it's leaving or arriving between Chicago & Switzerland 2 weeks ago.  The supplier keeps telling me to wait, wait wait.  I'm in far worse shape than the dog after getting stressed out between Royal mail and the supplier!

These companies are supplying  prescription meds without  a prescription  and you are breaking thee law by importing them.
That is if they ver arrive as many don't. Customs stop them.
You can ask  your vet for a referral to a specialist vet.
Also, consider what you feed your dog. My dog had a similar problem which went away when I stopped giving her Rodeo treats. Food sensitivity can cause itchy ears and itchy skin. Dogs can react to many things but gluten, chicken and colourings and additives are common.

You might want to look at something like Camrosa ointment or Anicura which seem to have a good track record rather than a steroid anything. Have a look at their before and after photos.

Try a dog food which is labelled 'sensitive' because that might also help. There are lots on the market- my 'boy' is wheat sensitive and gets on well with Burgess Sensitive Lamb (as an example)

Is it something that shows up in close up photos to send to the vet?

I've more photos of his underside than anywhere else!   This is the brand of food I use, but not from this source

I could try the Camrosa here, although it's not dryness or mites.

Try using one with different ingredients to what you normally use.
  • Not using any febreeze by any chance? Dogs can also be intolerant of certain washings powders etc.
hope you get it sorted out
