    You can't be a self employed employee. My guess is you are a sub-contractor working for a main contractor? If so, you will be in the construction industry scheme (CIS), and you must read the link on my earlier post. You need to get yourself registered, as otherwise you will have 30% (rather than 20%) deducted from your pay by the main contractor.

    After the tax year ends you have to complete a self assessment tax return, and that is when you claim your expenses, but you need to keep a note of them as you go along.
