Amazon Echo Dot et al - Alexa

If I buy an Echo dot (or whatever) with Alexa, I can link it to Spotify and it'll play certain playlists when I ask it to, correct?
But if I buy a second Echo dot (or whatever) smart speaker, I can't link that one to Spotify unless I pay a subscription to Amazon to do so, correct?
But I can use them both as an intercom system (IE, "Announce sinner is ready"), correct?
What else does the subscription cover?
I guess it's not included in Prime membership?

Sorry, thought it best ask the questions I want rather than muddle through the info on Amazon, which seemed to make less sense as I read it - I guess they don't want to admit it's not that great a deal!

It'll play pretty much whatever you ask it to play from Spotify

Not correct - I have a Spotify account, and can use it on 2 Amazon  echos and a Sonos Play 1 without any subscriptions payments to Amazon
