Logbook being returned to trader.
Options
We bought a used car for our sons for his birthday, full MOT recent full service, with warranty etc all seemed in great shape however after only 10 days engine blew, we returned the car and the trader has since given us a full refund but my issue is the logbook, because it was only bought recently we still haven't received the logbook (could take 3-4 weeks).
Do i have to wait for the logbook to arrive before i can send it back to the trader or is this something i can do on-line.
Im just worried that if anything happens to the car in his possession that we will be liable for it as its still in our name?
Also i haven't claimed the Road Tax yet, do i declare it as SORN or something else, and again is this done on-line?

You should have emailed DVLA as to the new keeper as soon as you knew you were to be refunded, to cover yourself (can't be done online as V5 is at DVLA). If the vehicle was involved in an incident since being returned, that email in your sent box
could be your only evidence if it came down to your word against the trader's.
SORN/retax is a decision for the trader.0 -
It happened 2 days ago so will email them, theres so many links on DVLA which one should use to let them know?I do have a signed and stamped receipt from him saying he refunded me on that date, hopefully that should cover me for now until i can email them.0

Your tax covered the car right up to the point you relinquished ownership, so I don't see anything to worry about.1 -

One positive story to offset the many - well done for not having to get into a fight to get your money back from the dealer.0

Has notified DVLA he has purchased car back from you? The dealer has been very helpful and you could ask him to confirm. If so do nothing and you will receive refund automatically. Took two weeks to receive mine, on a trade-in.
If dealer has notified DVLA, the tax (VED) will be due from 01st November. You check status here> https://www.gov.uk/check-vehicle-tax
Do you have the green new buyer portion / number from the old log book? You can claim refund online> https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-tax-refund
