How to efficiently use storage heater?

Hi,
I recently moved into a new apartment with storage heaters. There is a large one in the living space and smaller ones in the bedrooms. I'm not sure how the smaller ones work. There is no input/output dial, just 2 switches and a number dial.
How does this one work and how can I check if they are synched to the right time of day for cost efficiency?
Thank you

  • Hi,
    welcome.
    Are you on E7?
As you have just moved in have you taken meter readings and contacted the existing supplier to set up an account, as you will be on a deemed contract with them.
If you are thinking of switching supplier don't agree to a fixed contract with exit fees, then you can check out the comparison sites for a better deal.
Here's a wee video on how to use storage heater.
I think the heater in the picture is a panel heater, big switch on/off, smaller switch two heat settings high/low, and dial a thermostat control.
Take daily meter readings until you get an idea of usage, then at least once a month provide supplier with readings to avoid estimated accounts.

Good information from frugalmacdugal, but in case you didn't understand the different between a storage heater and a panel heater, the panel heater doesn't store heat; it produces heat instantaneously when the thermostat demands heat.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.
  • The electricity and gas were signed over to us, not much other information to go on unfortunately, but I'll look more into it though.
Thanks for your help! I really appreciate it

Have you got access to your meters ?
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

That's not possible. When you move in, you are in a deemed contract with the existing suppliers, with whom you need to register on day one. You can then switch.
The previous occupant's accounts are then closed and billed. You start with your own new account.
Post a pic of the whole heater, not just the controls.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

If an estate or lettings agent (or even a previous tenant) has signed you up, that could be bad news if it's with Spark or suchlike.  They will have been given a bung, and you'll be funding it via sky high charges.  It doesn't look like a storage heater, and if so it will be the most expensive way possible to heat the room because it will use day rate electricity.  Start switching !
