PS. I can't see how simply having no contact with the supplier and believing to be paying SSE can be construed as behaving "obstructively or unreasonably".
Failing to register with the deemed supplier, failing to even attempt to contact the deemed supplier and just continuing to consume energy without a care would seem to qualify as unreasonable I'd have thought?
... but it is always worth a try, if it works then the OP has been very lucky indeed...

I moved into a newbuild in Dec 2015 and was told SSE were responsible for gas, electric and water.
Did you get this statement in writing?
    Are you renting or buying?
Have you ever paid gas/electricity bills in your previous accomodation?

The OP has not been back since the initial first post of 2 days ago.
Did find it unbelievable at the time and now think it was a trolling / spoofy post?

If it is true then believe the OP really needs help.

But it appears to be down the list of OPs priorities at the moment to reply ?   :/

We see this all too often. OP was hoping we would all confirm that they would not have to pay anything for the last 5 years of free usage. When they don't get the replies they wanted, they're off, never to be heard of again.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Following as intrigued!  I agree it seems very strange the op wouldn’t submit meter readings or read their statements. Even weirder is after reading about ‘trolls’ that folk do this!

I'd have though back billing would apply. I'd have kept quiet too (and tried to put 1 year's bills worth aside). It's a lot more frequent than you would think and quite easy for the situation to occur.
