Next doors lavatory.

We live in a link detached house.   House, garage, house, garage set up.
Thirty odd years ago the neighbour made an extension to the rear of his garage that joined up to my external wall.  No problem.
He left, and we have established neighbours of fifteen years+, who, a few years ago (I  now find) installed a shower and a lavatory attached to my wall, they used it so rarely(if at all) I didnt even know it had been installed.
For the last few months they have taken to using it as their main bathroom, meaning that I can hear every shower and flush in both my dining room and the bedroom above, this starts at 06.15 and continues until they retire at 23.30.
I'm guessing there is nothing I can do about this ?
n.b. no permission was sought for either the extension, or the bathroom.
Its driving me crackers.

  • Can I assume you have elderly neighbours who can no longer go upstairs to use that one?

Have you considered fitting sound insulation?
  • No they're as fit as fiddles.
I'll have a look at sound insulation, thanks.
  • If you've got a good relationship with them, why not just mention it to them?  Most likely they're completely unaware that you can hear it so clearly.
  • When you say no permission was sought for the extension, do you mean they had no planning permission?

I dont think they needed PP for the extension, but t was 30 odd years ago anyway.  I dont know if they could (recently) just put a bathroom on my wall ?

They could; after all it's their house and authoritarian interference hasn't reached the point yet where rules are that restrictive!
However, what they did ought to have been carried out to building regulations standard, been inspected and signed-off as compliant.
As this seems to have happened some years ago, it's probably too late for enforcement now, and that's assuming something is wrong.
I think you may need to look into soundproofing from your side, but if you're friendly, you might both usefully look into what's wrong here. After all, they probably won't be comfortable knowing you can hear their every move(ment!)
