Diabetic Rottweiler

Hi all we have today found out our boy is diabetic and is now on insulin which is fine. The vet has suggested I feed him Chappie didn’t say how much and I don’t know if he will like dry. At the mo he has dry with a small amount of meat to encourage him to eat it ? Any suggestions ??

There is a great Facebook group for owners of diabetic dogs where you will get loads of advice, support and tips,  I definitely recommend joining.  I left after my diabetic dog died a few years ago but I'm sure its still going.

The vet should be monitoring his blood sugar levels to make sure the insulin dose is correct for him. Our cat was just diagnosed with diabetes and we have been taking her back to the vets for this.

So, even if the bit of wet food you are adding to his diet is a bit rich, the insulin dose should adjust for this. I guess it would make sense to not stop adding the wet food once the vet feels his diabetes is under control. You can get advice from your vet when you next see them. It doesn't sound like an urgent matter.  I'm sure he will be happier once his diabetes is under control.

The Chappie packaging should say how much food to give him for his weight. If you know he is overweight, you might decrease this a little, say 5-10%.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.

We used to give our diabetic dog dry chappie but would add a spoonful of meat paste mixed with hot water, less calories and they would eat all their food.  The dose for chappie is on the back of the packet and we used to give it twice a day.
