MSE Poll: Do you just head to Amazon when you shop online?

Retail giant Amazon reportedly accounted for nearly a third of all online spending in the UK last year – suggesting it's the first port of call for many. In 2018, our poll found 54% of those with Amazon Prime, and 19% of those without, mostly head straight to Amazon to shop without comparing prices elsewhere. Now we want to see if that's changed.

So tell us – do you compare prices when shopping online, or just head to Amazon out of habit?

I always do a full market comparison (Google Shopping or Pricespy) but end up at Amazon as the obscure items I want are often cheapest there.

Similar, but I often end up buying from Amazon because I have a lot less trust in some of the companies that pop up in Google Shopping and eBay, and frankly less trust for certain item categories (electronics) when it comes to even high street retailers like Curry's.

At least with Amazon I know I can return it with next to no fuss at all.

I try and make a point of NOT using Amazon.  I'm sure there's enough trade going Amazon's way that I don't need to increase it.  I guess I'm philosophically opposed to big companies and near-monopolies.

I do not use Amazon - I would rather spend a bit more and shop elsewhere. If I find something on Amazon I make the effort to find it elsewhere. For books I use hive.co.uk which supports independent bookshops.

I only buy online from Amazon. This is because I won't put my bank or card details on-line. I go to the Co-op and buy an Amazon voucher, which I credit to my account when I want to make a purchase.

Mostly always go to Amazon first - we don't have the range of shops/choice over here plus it's cheaper and we get the VAT taken off which most retailers over here keep on as "freight" charges.    Most all sellers (when it's marketplace) ship here (Channel Islands) whereas Amazon don't charge for postage either.....mostly

I have Prime, but... For books I go to Hive. For low value (less than about £9) I enjoy having Amazon deliver it next day.  Otherwise I'll compare. Ebuyer gives good advice on IT kit for example. Wex and other specialists for camera stuff...

I generally go out of my way to avoid Amazon. I only shop there as a last resort if I either can't find what I want else where, or can't find it at a price I can afford to pay. It troubles me that Amazon seem to basically be turning into a monopoly - which is bad whichever way you look at it; and that they reportedly don't pay fair taxes; and that they treat their workers like c***.

It is normally the first port of call but not always where the purchase is made from.

The "free" same day or next day delivery has a natural attraction and for low value items the convenience is great. For higher value items I will do a price check before clicking the buy button, until recently Amazon typically was one of the cheapest options for most things but more recently a few DIY type tools their price has been more middle of the road and others are cheaper.

Naturally you then have the choice of either buying from the known and generally trustworthy Amazon or pay less and buy from an unknown third party party. 

Clearly this forum is full of people's issues with returns with Amazon etc but never personally had issues with returns at all. The occasional issue with deliveries (still not found who the "receptionist" is who a batch of parcels were allegedly left with) but each time Amazon has instantly refunded the lost parcel.

I avoid Amazon 100% - they don't pay any tax on the billions of profit earnt which is a major factor for me for avoiding that vile billionaire owner who also treats his staff like dirt, people are worked far too hard and in their major warehouses, ambulances have complained about this fact due to the very high number of call outs made when people are collapsing at work, all on contracts so jobs not safe, no sick pay or holiday pay and he's a billionaire, no I avoid that vile man
