Help - need to put my LCD TV up on the wall?

Hi

Really excited as bought 32" lcd tv as a joint xmas pressie for me and hubbie. We have plasterboard walls and would like to put it up on wall.

Have heard many things about not hanging tv up on plasterboard. Can anyone offer advice as to how best to hang or how to go through to the brick etc.

Would really appreciate some advice.

Thanks

  • Hi,

As it happens, all the fuss about not hanging stuff on plasterboard is a bit OTT. With the right fixings it can be perfectly fine.

I've hung radiators in the past with plasterboard screws with absolutely no problems years and years down the line. The metal (not the plastic) plaster board screws (sometimes called easy driver or ready driver screws) are more than capable of taking the weight of a full radiator, so a TV will be a doddle.

    However...

Granted, with an expensive item such as a flat screen, for peace of mind, I would make the effort to drill through into the brick wall behind the board and put some proper wall anchors in.

Simply get yourself a long series masonary drill bit (preferably a 7mm bit and fit brown rawl plugs or better), mark up your wall, check theres no pipes or cables running behind, drill through the plasterboard and keep going, you'll feel the air gap between the dry lining and the brickwork, and make sure you're about 2 inches into the brick. Knock your plugs in (right into the brick work, you may need a drift or use a screw to knock it in full depth), get yourself some nice beefy screws which are long enough to get full depth into your plugs and you're definately safe then!!!
  • Hi
Try fixing to brick if at all possible, however if you must fix to plasterboard there is a much better fixing device which we use all the time, rather than the readydrive (which we used to use) and that is the Pro Gold Hammer Fixing - you can buy them at components direct i believe.

You don't say if you are talking about a structural wall which has been drylined, or an internal stud wall finished with plasterboard. If it's a stud wall, you should be OK if you can fix the brackets into the studs. On a solid wall, fix through into the brickwork.

My husband put ours onto a stud wall. He found the joists and made sure the bracket was firmly attached to those rather than the plasterboard. It's been fine!

He also made a hole in the wall behind the TV, and a hole in the wall behind the cabinet with the DVD player, Sky box and Xbox in. All the cables are fed through the holes, so it looks really tidy.
Here I go again on my own....
