Help plse with fitting of patio doors by company.

Help plse, I'm starting to lose the plot!  I made a claim on my insurance for my patio doors which were damaged during the last storm.  The insurance company accepted after the surveyor came out and a date was made to fit the new patio doors.  My query with the company who would fit the patio doors was how the men would bring the frame into my garden.  It can't come through the gate as there is a part along the top and the frame would be too big to fit through it.  I am side on to a right of way and I don't know if they will be able to lift the frame over the fence and into my garden.  I managed to get out of them that it would be just two men and so I'm wondering how one man one side could lift the large frame over the fence to the other man.  My existing patio doors, which are really wide, have a frame that is all in one.  When they were originally fitted, there was a different gate in place and came through that way, but now they can't.  They can't bring it through the front door as it's on the side so they wouldn't be able to bring it through.  When I first queried this, I was told by the receptionist that 'they have ways & means.'  This is no good to me, because I need to know how?  If they struggle by trying to pass it over the fence and they damage my fence, I know I can hold them responsible, but I wouldn't want my fence down until it could be repaired, living next to a right of way.  Following on from yet another phone call I did receive an email to say it would be flat packed, but it would still be a big frame  Nobody is telling me exactly how it would work.

So after my long rant, can anyone tell me if they have had large patio doors fitted whose frame comes in two pieces please?  Or if you have any other advice that would be really welcome.  TIA.

I'm not sure why you are concerning yourself before anything has even been done.
You have made them aware there are access issues, so leave them to sort it out by themselves.
I'm sure there are plenty of tricky installs that they deal with regularly.

Because of, as explained, the access to my garden.  It's too late when the fence has come down because they've tried and failed to get the frame over it.  They also put in their email that there are no access issues when there are!

But how will one man be able to pass a massive frame over the fence to the other man?

  • Although they are large frames they are mainly made of plastic and the glass is installed after  the frames and doors have been fitted , so everything comes seperate

Because of this the frame is actually quite light and the two people installing it will have no worries getting it to where it needs to be , so stop worrying!

Two men one side of the fence lift frame onto top of fence, protected by a blanket. One man holds it steady while the other man goes to other side of fence. Second man holds it steady while first man comes to his side and they both lift it off together.
Or any one of a myriad of other ways to do it.

What seems massive and heavy to you might not be to two men (and they probably will be men) who do this every day.  Don't worry, they'll find a way. Even if they had to remove the fence they'll put it back.

Unfortunately the fence isn't the type that you can just lift out, it would be a case of replacing the posts and the individual vertical slats so not a job they would do, but thank you for your reply.

  • Littlewren, almost certainly they will be able to lift what is a large but very manageably light PVC frame clean over your fence. They'll then carry the glazed doors through your house.

    Happy New Patio Doors.
