    Depends on if "driven hard" means like the focuses that threat my road like a racetrack. No engine is going to last long at the sort of engine speeds they run at- they leave a trail of oil  smoke behind them :)
    (If they were in top gear not 1st, they would be doing around 160 mph!)

    This has to be a wind-up. No one could seriously think they are liable for a potential buyer's taxi fare....good story though.

    You let them do it but they might have insurance in place, you just didn't check.
    Even if they had produced a valid comprehensive insurance certificate, it almost certainly wouldn't cover DoC which themselves aren't insured.
