Moved back with parents what benefits available ?

Our 28 year old unemployed child has moved back to live with us. Are they entitled to any benefits or are we expected to support them?

If they've worked and paid the correct amount of NI contributions in tax years April 2017 to April 2019 then they can claim New style JSA. It pays £74.35 per week for 26 weeks.
Universal Credit may also be possible. If they have savings/capital of more than £16,000 they'll be excluded from claiming. If they claim both of these together the NsJSA will be deducted £1 for £1 from any UC entitlement.
Although the NsJSA is deducted from the UC it will still be worth while claiming both because it pays class 1 NI credits and UC pays class 3. UC standard allowance also pays more than NsJSA because of the increase due to Covid, which up to now is expected to end in April 2021.
They won't be able to claim for any rent because they are living with you.
If you're claiming any benefits yourself, like housing benefit or housing element of UC then you'll need to report the changes that your son/daughter is now living with you.

Thanks . He is moving out if the area he was living and was claiming universal credit and was apparently told as he was moving in with us he wasn't entitled to claim anything and his claim was closed.
    We don't receive any benefits.
We don't expect him to pay rent but daily living shouldn't be our burden.

What is the job situation where you live, is he applying for jobs?  It is not your burden to pay daily living, it's his.

That is completely wrong. He is a single claimant and has a benefit entitlement as such. Obviously if his UC previously included help with rent he will no longer be entitled to this but he retains entitlement to the the single person allowance of £409.89/month subject to a reduction for any other income he has.
Are you sure the claim has been closed? Possibly he has misunderstood the situation. He should try logging in to his UC journal. If it shows as closed he should still be able to do a rapid reclaim through the journal. Before doing this he should make a copy of all the information relating to his claim as the reclaim will remove all the existing information.
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.
