If the supermarkets really cared they'd leave lots of boxes out for customers but why give away something for free which you can sell (for recycling) and instead charge the customer for something else. Since the tax the bags for life have become more predominately displayed from what I've seen as they don't come under the plastic bag tax, one way or the other they want to sell you bags.
Many supermarkets are moving away from cardboard boxes so they won't have many to put out. Most fruit and veg comes in plastic crates as does meat. Other items come in shelf-ready trays or similar not large strong boxes. The days of heavy strong boxes in supermarkets are long gone. Independants where they don't have own brand fruit and veg are more likely to have boxes, for example Costco put out the fruit and veg boxes for customers to use.

If customers really cared though they would bring their own reusable bags.
For delivery I think places should be switching to bag-free so it arrives in crates, unpack and hand them back as Tesco do. I'm not sure what Ocado & Morrisons insist on the use of bags.
Out of interest do things like spirits and wine still come in boxes?

Yes of course taking your own is good and people could also take their own boxes, we lay them out in the boot and then empty the trolley by the car, no pressure to pack things quickly at the till so it's nicely organised and personally I find it easier to carry into the house, although I understand not everybody drives and you can't carry a dozen boxes on the bus.

For home delivery I don't see the point of the bags.

Yes. They seem to be specially-designed to disintegrate on opening I'm afraid  The speed we work at means they're even quite difficult to open without ruining the intended "shelf display" version. As they come in six-packs they're also not a very practical size for reuse.

Even in the OP's case the amount going to a "good cause" will be 45p minus VAT.
You mean that HMRC isnt a good cause for the 0.83p per bag? Surely the NHS for example is a good cause? :P  :#
Think of all the nurses it could pay for!!!

  • What l have found with Morrisons is we were returning bags but they weren't taking them off the bill.

You cant contact them at the moment. Of you call they say sorry we have turned our lines off, email us. If you email them, it bounces back.

    No longer using Morrisons.

I have been fighting Morrisons on the issue of forcibly selling plastic carrier bags to online customers since March this year - without success. I have been through Resolver and even approached my member of parliament (James Gray9, who wrote to the CEO on my behalf and merely sent me a copy of their reply - which did not address the issue of breaching the Unsolicited Goods and Services Act 1971. Citizens Advice say they have informed Trading Standards too but it seems no one has teeth!

I have absolutely no idea what this means!

However, on a more serious note, I am pleased to report that my MP is taking the matter further on my behalf and is contacting the Minister for Small Business, Consumers and Labour Markets, who he believes is overall responsible for this policy area. He is also contacting Morrisons again as they failed to respond to the issues concerning breach of the Unsolicited Goods and Services Act 1971. I find it hard to believe that Morrisons can continue breach that act, exploit their customers and continue to damage the environment in this way without being held to account.

It's a reference to the rather elderly OP of the thread you've resurrected.

It has to do with consumer rights - and the environment too. To be forced to buy 11 plastic carrier bags, in order to have 24 grocery items delivered (bags I have not ordered and not been given the opportunity to refuse - or return immediately request a refund for) is both a huge amount of plastic to put into the environment and an abuse of my consumer rights. Both of these things are pertinent  to this discussion and appropriate to this website.
