Based on the same situation with an elderly relative, install broadband and setup an Amazon Show 8" at each end.
Provided both are setup in the same group you can then 'drop in' - screen is big enough for elderly eyes to see and they don't need to physically operate a smart device - which is beyond many 'older' people.
Didn't know those things existed - that looks like a perfect solution for the OP if they can get broadband installed at MIL's

Thanks for all suggestions. She has a mobile phone and does indeed text but it’s one of those “ big button phones for seniors” She wouldn’t be able to use a smart phone. For much the same reason, i don’t think she could cope with a tablet. I’m going to look into the Amazon show.

    Smartphone  setup Whattsapp .
Place Its shortcut on home screen   works for me .
But key for OP is internet connection and how .
  • We use an Amazon echo for a 90+ year old. Works well with Alexa so there is just a short crib sheet for commands such as 'Alexa, video call  (person's name)........Alexa end call'
Used via a stand alone very small box to use mobile phone signal (4g?) Via WiFi to the Echo so no need for broadband or router and can be suitably positioned. Works well but screen is not as big as 8" tablet though big enough in this case.

That is misnamed it is an Amazon Echo 'device' (like the 5" one wot I suggested, think it used to be just an Echo by name) see https://www.amazon.co.uk/amazon-echo-show-5-compact-smart-display-with-alexa/dp/B07KD7TJD6 and there is a bigger version and more complex versions E Show 8, E Show, ES10. It is a communications device similar to a very cut down tablet but much less complicated so a lot more suitable. The "better" ones are bigger in stages of more complex with facilities that are not really required and consequently much pricier. The 5" is currently about £40 the E Show (one of the 10" versions) a hefty £179 at present.
