Should the Government act NOW to reform leasehold? LEASEHOLD SCANDAL
Comments
-
Many homebuyers were told, often at a very late stage, that their newbuild house was leasehold, but were assured by developers' trained sales teams that they could buy the freehold after 2 years, for about £3,000 - £5,000. Unfortunately, they weren't told the freehold could be sold on, without giving them right of first refusal, to freehold investors, as part of a bundle, with the freeholds of other houses in their phase of the development, or that the new freeholder would raise the cost of buying the freehold by thousands of pounds Leasehold is one of the murkiest areas of today's flawed, monetised housing system, in England and Wales. No wonder that the CMA is now pursuing 4 developers over probable misselling.musti_2 said:Yes leasehold is feudal system must be banned immediately full stop. We are all innocent and suffering because no one told us these house are leasehold.
The advertising of these freeholds to investors highlights the profit that can be made from permission fees, ground rents and increasing property values.6 -

There are many problems with leasehold but to say it’s comparable with slavery is offensive. It’s so disappointing to see Katie propagate this comparison. I’ve been a member of the NLC FB group for a couple of years which I’m now considering leaving. As someone said early, the comparison is both stupid and offensive.maximaxi7 said:Leasehold is just life destroying for many people, and simply an excuse to extort money at every opportunity. Most buyers never had the full implications explained to them during the sales process ( and yes they knew they were buying leasehold) before the trolls jump in. These implications include ridiculously over inflated lease extensions, permission fees etc etc. In addition to the employment of unscrupulous management companies, who have caused no end of misery for leaseholders. End this antiquated system now, the gravy train needs to be derailed.
Some people need to not be so sensitive and grow up. We are stifled these days by woke nonsense. Nobody here is condoning slavery in any shape or form or belittling the terrible suffering of slaves in the past or now.
If the word hostage was used as in "hostage to fortune" more people would probably get upset.5 -
I agree with Katie it could be classed as a form of slavery, in that leaseholders are always being punished financially by their ‘masters’ for the privilege of living on their land. I’m sure it wasn’t meant as a direct comparison to the original meaning, and any suggestions of such are just diversion tactics. Focus less on the choice of wording, and more on the ethical principles, or lack of them, that apply here.ftbhopes said:

If the word hostage was used as in "hostage to fortune" more people would probably get upset. If you don’t think comparing slavery to a bunch of people who were too stupid and/or too lazy to research what they were buying is offensive that is up to you.In the same way, and I am sure you will be supportive and not be a whiny snowflake over this, someone else is allowed to think that you are a bigoted fool for choosing to grandstand about ‘wokeness’ over people who got, unsurprisingly, offended over said comparisons.3 -
This is spot on! It is called mis-sold for a reason. What a great way to sell homes to unsuspecting buyers with the option to buy your freehold at a few thousand pounds after 2 years and then sell it on without telling you after a couple of months to an investor. Wow what a clever deceiving tactic! No mention of permission fees or other associated costs!bids24 said:

I do/ did support the aims of the group and deadly against the system we have. I do not support the method and as you’ve now directly linked the aims of your group against my comments to the offensive comparisons I will gladly leave the group and bring this to anyone who mentions NLCKatiejane13uk said:

I count 6 separate accounts who have only ever posted in this thread, and have added nothing useful. All mysteriously in violent agreement with the OP. Several more who have only ever posted in this thread and an earlier, equally tedious one in January.

‘Slave to the kitchen, slave to work’ are words in context, take a different meaning. The link provided DIRECTLY links to the historic and barbaric forms of slavery and the text with the post was ‘draws parallels to’simondv said:
