Scrapping a car with a private plate (plus car sitting for time questions)

I still own my last car as was going to hold on to it to fall back to in case the current car turned out to be such a lemon that i'd need to do that. I don't have to, yet, but it's close

I was going to put it up for sale and if nothing came of it then scrap it. If i sell it then obviously it'll need the private plate removing and a new plate putting on.

What about if it's scrapped though? Again, it'll need the private plate removing, but do i need to get a new plate made up and put on it just to send it in for scrap? I'm thinking possibly but i'm asking in case the answer is actually no and i can save myself £20 or whatever a plate will cost.

As for a car sitting a while. It's been unused since the beginning of September - literally the 1st. Up until then there was no issue with the car. In the time it's been sat idle it has developed a coolant leak. It's currently moved around from time to time where it's located. I started it up myself today and noticed dripping from the front of the rad and also where the rad connects in to the pipe top left as you look at it - the rad was showing signs of being wet.
In addition to this, the ground strap has frayed off that connects the engine to the frame of the car. Now while i had no coolant issue before not using it i had noticed it had started to look like it had seen better days with the strap - but i didn't think it was about to snap off so soon.

Is any of this typical for having sat for 6 weeks? I wouldn't have thought so. Ok car is 19 years old so that wont help. Maybe it's all just coincidental and would've happened at this point in time anyway if i'd have continued to use it.

Put the number on retention. You need to do this (online, forget posting it, that takes forever) a week or more before you sell it, so that you have the correct V5- it is a royal pain trying to sell/scrap a car and retain the 'plate on the same day, so don't try it.
If you are not going to drive the car on the road, then you don't need road legal numberplates, make some with cardboard and a magic marker :)
There is a school of thought that says according to the letter of the Law, the vehicle has to have numberplates all the time, even when it is inside your garage- I doubt very much if the Police would be bothered if it is sat on your drive or in the garage though.

as to the faults, I've no idea, maybe it was a little harder to start and that finished off the cable, and it has been leaking for ages, but driving it round kept drying it up, could even be frost damage?
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))

Have you complied with all the requirements to be able to take the plate off ?

  • Thanks for the feedback.
I wasn't aware there were requirements but I dont see which of those I fall foul of so I think I'm good to go.

Car is currently stored on private land but where a number of people use it. That'll sound unusual I suppose so in a nutshell it's stored at a relatives house. Yup - declared Sorn.
  • Hope it still has an MOT.

Why? I never saw anything in there that said it needed to have an MOT.

Really? What if you are busy restoring the car and the bumper + maybe a lot more parts are off.

I take it this is just stupid red tape that no body enforces.

No need to according to the .gov.uk link that's been provided
  • Yeah my take was it just needs to be a vehicle that would require a MOT.
Well, it is. It just doesn't have one. It's on private land and isn't setting wheel on the road.
Any sales advert would be totally honest and the car isn't worth a great deal anyway. Anything above scrap value would be a bonus and anything below it would get rejected as i may as well scrap it.
