Short term car insurance

Was looking for some suggestions  please, my car insurance is due in a couple of months and annoyingly I had a large at fault accident that will be over 3 years old four days after this renewal date.
I believe that insurance claims aren't taken into account after 3 years and I had protected no claims at the time so don't want to pay an inflated premium for another year.
What are the options to bridge the gap for the 4 days? I've read about short term car insurance but will this be more expensive than the difference on the premiums? I need my car to commute to work so a hire car may be cheaper for a week?
Any other suggestions gratefully received

Was curious as my current insurer told me that they excluded claims after 3 years

I have used temp car insurance a few times to borrow cars from family members. Normally costs around £50 for a day or £100 for a week. Most insurers exclude cars over 15 years old.

We do that, too. The issue here is that the car has to be covered by existing insurance for the temporary policy we use (Veygo). Perhaps the one you use doesn't have that requirement? We pay £20 or less per day...

Insurers are free to price how they see fit as long as they don't break any laws... there are no laws around declaring accidents and so the typical range is 3-5 years but nothing to stop an insurer choosing a longer or shorter timeframe.

Size of claims tend not to make much difference plus your idea of "large" may be significantly different to your insurer's view... my current client's large loss unit deals with claims over £100,000 in value if injuries are involved or £250,000 if no injuries for example. One chap doesnt look at anything below £3m.
