Heating Went Off,With Smell off Gas at Meter

Hi my son moved into this rental flat 3 weeks ago. It is on the ground floor of an old block, and you would say it has seen better days. It was for short term as he is flat is still awaiting completion, but that’s another long story.

Anyway, the flat is very cold and damp, so he has the central heating on most of the time.

Late last night he noticed the heating was off so he went to the controls to advance it on for an hour but he couldn't get it to come on. He went to the meter to check the supply valve was on properly, it’s located above his front door in the hall. He noticed a smell of gas there. He turned the gas supply fully off and then fully on then went to the boiler to try it and it now came on. The meter made a clattering noise for several minutes then went quiet.

He opened his windows and doors and the smell quickly disappeared,he contacted us, his parents and we advised him to phone the emergency gas number.

The Engineer quickly arrived and checked everything but found no fault was found.

Any gas experts here know what was going on here as a bit worrying.
