Stopped cheque still paid out?

Hi my father in law in his 80s had a random cold caller for solar panels and ended up giving them a cheque for £1700. As soon as he told us (the day it happened), we advised him to stop the cheque, which he did that day.
The cheque was with Halifax.
We contacted the solar panel company and told them and that we were not impressed and to take fils details off their system etc.
4 days later they presented the cheque and the Halifax paid it out!!!! They have since confirmed that they do indeed have a record of fil cancelling the cheque and they will get back to him this week.
What happens now please? Does anyone know? Will the Halifax pay it back or will we have some fight on our hands?
Many thanks

You need to wait for Halifax to get back to
    you. As they’ve already advised.

Given it was cancelled you should have no problems with Halifax refunding it. It is their error. TBH given they have already admitted that, the refund should already be there.
If they say NO refund. It is complaint time. As clear bank error.
