I think the film was well balanced - ensemble as well as performances by Larry Fishbuorne and Kevin Spacey.
Would like to read the true story/book on which it is based.
ODEON 7 Brum - Not as packed as it was for 'IN Bruges'.
[Same compere guy as for that film ]
9/100 -
Just back from Sun newspaper free screening of Leatherheads. Was very surprised to find cinema less than one third full.
Guess that's what happens when people have to go and pick up tickets, particularly if no free screenings on in the cinema on the day you have to pick up the tickets.
Film was really good, very enjoyable. Good storyline and held your attention.
GC was, as ever, a pleasure to watch.Renee looked so thin tho hard to believe she was Bridget Jones.

Blimey, I think I got it! But it only works because the host knows what's behind the doors and has to open a door with a goat behind. So, as you have a 2/3 chance of picking a goat in the first place, the host has now revealed the other goat, and by switching, you have a 2/3 chance of getting the car. Which also means that it would never work on Deal or No Deal as there are only two boxes and no one knows what's in the boxes. Gosh, I am so proud of myself.
Hi Beate.
As soon as I read your query last night about "game show percentage" I wondered if it was the Monty Hall problem - something I'm very familiar with - and when I saw 21 tonight, as soon as Spacey said "game show host" and "3 doors" I already knew the answer.
Monty Hall was the name of the American game show host from where the problem arose and it caused quite a stir in the USA when the "you should always swap to DOUBLE your chance of winning" proposal was raised. Even the head of a top university got involved and she argued it was rubbish and it made no difference - it being a 50:50 chance - despite the fact that she was a professor of mathmatics. It is PRIOR KNOWLEDGE that changes the odds.
2 doors - 1 car & 1 goat - pick 1 - yes 50:50 which wins
But if you picked when there were 3 doors (1 wins but 2 lose) Your door is most likely to be a losing door, so when 1 of the other doors is eliminated as 1 of the losing doors, and you're given the chance to swap - the remaining door is most likely to be the winner.
It does rely on one other fact that is rarely mentioned, which is, that the game show host MUST ALWAYS make the swap offer after he's opened a losing door NO MATTER which door (winning or losing) that the contestant had selected when there were 3. Otherwise the odds are tainted / distorted if the swap is ONLY offered in biased, unfavourable conditions or perhaps with the knowledge of certain characteristics of the contestant in question
JessW's post above with the 3 outcomes shows the probabilities well.
30 people play the game and NEVER swap - on average you get 10 winners
30 people play the game and ALWAYS swap - on average you get 20 winners
I've explained it many times and loads of people still never really get the concept of swapping DOUBLES the chance of winning - insisting that it has to be 50:50. Well if a university professor of mathmatics can't get her head around it, indeed go on TV and argue that she was right until she was blue in the face, then I suppose it is understandable for "mere mortals".
For those that do struggle to understand I find that significantly increasing the number of doors often helps.
For example - There are 1 million and 1 doors (1,000,001) with a car behind 1 of them.
You are asked to pick a door.
(Do you REALLY think you've got the car ? Where do you think it actually is?)
The gameshow host open 999,999 doors - nothing behind any of them !
He offers a swap - Your door for his last remaining door!
Do you ? (remember it's only 50:50 :rotfl: )

Back on topic - 21 - The Movie !
8/10 (thought there was going to be more maths - :rotfl: )
Not a bad plot but it has all but been done before - Nice caper with a couple of twists but I'd have added 2 more that I thought of as I was watching it.

Thanks - I guess the whole game show thing was there to show us what a brilliant mathematical mind Ben had! And if I ever take part in a game show with three doors involved, I know what to do now!Reclaimed thanks to this site:

I think the funniest bits were shown in the trailers, and they aren't as funny the 3rd or 4th time, but I did lol loads during this movie.
It did seem a little slow in places, but when it finally got to the point, I thought it was great. I loved the last half hour or so. Good film and I'm glad I went out of my way a little to go and see it (it wasn't at my local).

I went to see 21 last night, the screen was half full as it started and then quite a few groups of people came in so it ended up about 80% full.I thought it very good film, a bit slow going in places but I'm used to that. I enjoyed the perfomance by the lead actor I thought it was good that they hadn't chosen a well known actor as that would have made it less believable that he was a 'genius'. I give it 7.5/10 as it's on a par with my enjoyment level of 27 Dresses.
As soon as he started describing the card counting technique with the plus and minus thing it all came back to me that I've read about card counting technique before but it was a new twist to here about the team, signals and code words etc. and at least this group of students didn't all get murdered like they did in an episode of Numb3rs last week which was based on a very similar thing!
In conclusion I don't think Beate and I will make good card counters....we struggled to just keep track of the number of '21' and 'In Bruges' codes! :rotfl:0
