I am sure that thread title does not read correctly.

The scheme is not to help shut down businesses.

The scheme is intended to support the survival of businesses that are temporarily required to close because of lockdown restrictions.

Does this scheme offer any support for self-employed as well or is it only for paye?
I run (did!) mobile bars for weddings, this would fit the criteria in the new scheme under the "providing food or drink outdoors " but I am.a sole trader and it only seems to talk about employees?

There are two benefits, if you are required by law to close your place of business (for example a bar):
    • you can claim up to 2/3 of your staff's wages, and do not have to pay anything more, except pension contributions and employer's NIC
    • you get a grant, which varies in amount in line with rateable value, the minimum being £1,300 a month for RV up to £15,000
If you don't occupy business premises and don't have any employees, you don't get this support.

Its only if you are ordered to close by the government,  you can't just choose to go on it...

I personally have not been ordered to close.
But all the venues have been and numbers have been restricted to 15 so I dont have any work.
I'm self employed though and I go to places, i don't have a venue myself.
So looks like it's no use to me anyway.

If you have no income and meet the eligibility you can claim universal credit.

Never look at the hand that Sunak is showing, always check what he is doing with his other hand behind his back.

This support is primarily designated for the hospitality and leisure industries where a lot of the staff are on zero contracted hours so don't qualify for support. And what about the companies/people that are indirectly affected by the closures. For example, the cleaners, suppliers, taxi drivers etc, they get nothing as it stands.

They will need to do better if a full lockdown does materialise.

And this is going to be the issues. Suppliers of premises closed down are not going to be eligible for the enhanced support, it hasnt been fully thoughy through this.

When was the last time anyone in this government did anything that had been 'fully thought through'?
