Rights due to faulty electrical work

Options
Hi
My electrics starting tripping just over a year ago. I called out an emergency electrician who fitted a new RCB board call out £120 and cost o board £320. My electrics tripped again this week. I have called British Gas who say the board is unsafe and need to be replaced as a matter of urgency and we should not use wall sockets in the house. They have quoted me £772. Is there anyway I can get any money back from the original contractor ? both cost of installation and replacement. I really don't want the original contractor to carry out any remedial work as i am unsure how safe it wil be.

Why British Gas called out ??  Did all your electrics trip or just one RCB >
Money back from original installer  via Small Claims Court  but really you must give him the chance to put right .

Which Competent Person scheme was the contractor a member of? I would try to get a second opinion from the scheme, or at least someone else who is registered with the scheme. £772 is a steep price to pay to change a consumer unit. The previous unit should be perfectly serviceable, but may be fitted badly, but I am struggling to see how changing the unit will make it any safer. Why did British Gas say the board was unsafe?
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.

surely changing the RCD and consumer unit will not help if there is an intermittent fault somewhere in the house?
Opp, have a go at finding out what is causing the problem, isolate each circuit one at a time and see which circuit the fault is on, then look at what runs in that circuit.
Most RCD trips are from things like fridges, immersion heaters, kettle, coffee machine etc.
Few or even none are the fault of the RCD and/or consumer unit unless they are very very old!
Why have BG said the new one needs changing?  The rules changed recently and they now need to be non combustable and some old ones which do not comply were on Ebay for a while. But there are many thousands of these in use and IMO they are safe to leave there.
Opp can you post a pic of the consumer unit?
