Motorhome Hire

We live in Wales and have a motorhome booked for hire for a long weekend.  The hire business is currently in a lockdown area and as we do not live in the same county we should not travel into that county with a reasonable excuse.  The hire company say we can because we have a legal obligation (a hire contract), however trading standards advise hiring a vehicle to go on holiday is not a reasonable excuse so we could be liable for a fine if we entered the county to collect the hire vehicle.  They have refused to deliver the vehicle to us.  What are our rights in this situation - should we get a refund, could we do chargeback via the credit card or do we have to accept the offer of a deferment.

As someone who is in a tourist dependant area of Wales, I'd say take the deferment if it's on offer. No one loses out then, the company still get the money, you're no worse out of pocket as the money has been spent already & you've got a holiday when all this is over.
  • They are right - technically you do have a legal obligation in the contract, so you're in the clear.
If you choose not to pick it up, it's your loss to bear - their offer for deferment is more than fair.
  • Well I could be pedantic & say that even if they delivered the vehicle up to you, under the current restrictions, you'd only be allowed to tour the county of residence ....& I can't see that being much fun.

the way I see it you have a number of options:
    1. Pick up the motor home as planned
    2. Accept the deferment
    3. Look to see if your holiday insurance will cover the cost
