Difference between information from surveyor vs solicitor when buying?

I've just started buying a flat, and I noticed that in addition to the surveyor, the solicitor also does "searches" on the property. What's the difference between the information I can expect out of them?
Also a more specific question: I'd like to find about any bad neighbors in the building (I've suffered from noisy neighbors when renting), who can I expect to find this information for me?

Sounds odd.Ask surveyor and solicitor what searches each is doing..Lurk close at various times of the day and days of the week - especially friday & saturday evenings.. Sit in your car & listen.But "bad" neighbours can move in any time, many of the worst being smug middle-class owner-occupiers who bang on all the time about bleedin' house prices. Monsters can move in any time, maybe 5 minutes after you buy. Good.. luck!

Surveyor surveys the state of the building.
Searches look at things like planning applications, drainage, flood risks etc.
Any disputes have to be declared by the vendors although there isn't a cut and dry definition of what a dispute is. You could specifically ask your solicitor to ask the question of the vendors but could be difficult to prove if they aren't honest as it is very subjective. Living in a flat it is always going to be a gamble.

Surveyor checks and reports on construction of the building (eg: will it fall down next week?)Solicitor checks and reports on legal matters relating to the property.When you knock on the neighbours doors, you'll find out one way or another. If they are rude/refuse to speak to you, you've learned a lot. If they are friendly, they'll tell you all about those w*nk*rs the other side of you at number 23! Or they'll tell you what a lovely street it is!
